From the Desk of the CEO: The Value of Long Service
In today’s world, changing jobs has become increasingly common. While there is nothing wrong with pursuing genuine career opportunities, there is still tremendous value in loyalty, commitment, and long-term service.
This is particularly true in the security industry, where trust, reliability, and experience are among the most important qualities an employee can possess. Security companies invest significant time and resources in training employees, developing their skills, and preparing them for positions of greater responsibility. The individuals who build long-term careers within an organisation are often those who gain the deepest operational knowledge, earn the trust of their colleagues and clients, and ultimately progress into leadership roles.
Career success is seldom achieved overnight. Promotions, increased responsibility, professional recognition, and leadership opportunities are typically the result of consistent performance over many years. Employees who remain committed to their development and contribute to the success of their organisation often find that the rewards extend far beyond salary alone. They build reputations, establish professional networks, and create opportunities that cannot be achieved through constant job-hopping.
The diagram above illustrates a reality that is often overlooked. Employees who move frequently between employers may achieve occasional short-term salary increases, but they often restart the process of earning trust, demonstrating capability, and positioning themselves for promotion. As a result, while their remuneration may increase incrementally, their overall career progression can be slower than that of individuals who remain with an organisation long enough to develop expertise, credibility, and leadership potential.
This does not suggest that employees should never change employers. Career moves are sometimes necessary and can provide valuable growth opportunities. However, there is a significant difference between a strategic career move and a pattern of frequent job changes. Long-term career success is often built through sustained performance, continuous learning, and the ability to demonstrate impact over time. In many cases, the greatest rewards come not from moving more often, but from staying long enough to grow into positions of greater responsibility and influence.
Long-serving employees also become custodians of an organisation’s culture and values. They understand not only the procedures and systems that govern daily operations, but also the standards, traditions, and professional behaviours that define the organisation. Their experience often proves invaluable when mentoring younger employees, assisting with training, and helping new team members adapt to the expectations of the workplace.
Within the security industry, experience remains one of the most valuable assets an employee can possess. While technology continues to transform the way security services are delivered, sound judgement, professionalism, and practical experience remain qualities that can only be developed over time. Employees who have worked through different operational challenges, client environments, and leadership responsibilities bring a level of maturity and insight that cannot be acquired through training alone.
Long service also benefits clients. Many of our clients value continuity and appreciate working with individuals who understand their operations, risks, and expectations. Strong relationships are built over time, and employees who remain committed to their roles often become trusted advisors and valued partners to the clients they serve. This contributes directly to service excellence and strengthens the reputation of the organisation as a whole.
As leaders, we have a responsibility to create environments where people can build meaningful careers rather than simply hold jobs. This requires investment in training, leadership development, succession planning, employee well-being, and opportunities for growth. When employees choose to remain with an organisation for many years, it is often a reflection of a relationship built on mutual trust, respect, and shared success.
The security industry places a particularly high value on stability and trustworthiness. Clients entrust us with the protection of people, assets, and information. As a result, employers naturally place considerable value on employees who demonstrate commitment, reliability, and professionalism over an extended period.
This does not mean that changing employers is always the wrong decision. Career advancement, personal growth, and new opportunities are important considerations. However, moving frequently for marginal gains can sometimes hinder long-term development and prevent individuals from reaching their full potential.
In the Omega Group we are proud of the many employees who have chosen to build their careers with us. Their loyalty, dedication, and professionalism have contributed significantly to our success and helped shape the organisation we are today.
It is therefore my privilege to recognise and thank some of our long-serving colleagues whose commitment and service deserve special recognition, including employees across Angola, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe with between 13 and 23 years of service to the Omega Group.
