Training and Development

On 10th May 2013, Distell invited Omega Risk Solutions to partake in an evacuation drill and firefighting competition. A fire drill is a method of practicing evacuation of personnel from a building for a fire or other emergency. Generally, the emergency system sounds and the building is evacuated as though a real fire had occurred. Usually, the time it takes to evacuate is measured to ensure that it occurs within a reasonable length of time, and problems with the emergency system or evacuation procedures are identified to be remedied.

Security plays a vital role during these evacuations and normally is the first responder to any emergency that may arise, especially outside normal working hours. Therefore it is crucial that these drills occur on a regular basis to ensure that all role players are fully trained and are familiar with the evacuation procedures.

Fire drills play a very important role in workplace fire safety. Although OSHA does not require fire drills, it strongly recommends the drill in its Evacuation Plans.

The Fire Department evaluated the drill and was responsible to evaluate staff during the Fire Fighting competition. After the drill, management and employees gathered for a debriefing, where the effectiveness of the drill was discussed. Strengths and weaknesses of the exercise were highlighted by the Fire Department and Distell was commended on the drill.

The day started with an Evacuation drill and was followed by a Fire Fighting competition between Omega Risk Solutions and Distell fire teams. Omega Risk Solutions came second amongst the 6 teams who participated. The day was concluded with a teambuilding and prize giving.
